Biography
Ioan Negrutiu, professor of biology at Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon since 1994 and member of the Institut Universitaire de France. Presently director of the Biology Department at ENS Lyon.
I studied agriculture and biological sciences in Romania and Belgium, and obtained my PhD in biology at the Free University of Brussels (1977). I subsequently developed my research activities in Belgium, Switzerland (FMI in Basel) and France (ENS Lyon), by working in plant classical genetics and molecular biology (aminoacid biosynthesis and regulation, gene transfer technology) and plant evolution and development (mechanisms of biodiversity and speciation, flower evo-devo).
I participated at ad-hoc commissions evaluating research programs to the benefit of international and national institutions (IAEA, CYMMIT, USDA, BBSRC, HSFP, INRA, CNRS…) and in European Council projects on environmental aspects of agricultural and rural development and local democracy (Romania).
My teaching experience is in molecular genetics and epigenetics, integrative plant biology, plant development and evolution, biodiversity and biological resources, but also in history of sciences and contemporary problems of science and society. I assist students in projects through which they can see how biological sciences are key to a new eco-society and economy.
