Biography
Leon Braat is Senior Researcher International Biodiversity Policy at Alterra, Wageningen UR, and Coordinator of the Ecosystem and Landscape Services program.
He was associate professor and researcher in the field of environmental modelling and ecological-economics at the University of Florida, the Institute for Environmental Studies-Free University, Amsterdam, and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria (1975-1990). In this period he published in a great number of journals and co-wrote and edited several books on ecological-economics. He completed a Ph.D. dissertation on the subject of sustainable multiple use forestry in 1992 and subsequently moved to the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, where he directed the team that produces the Dutch National State of Nature reports and Nature Outlook studies. At Alterra, since 2007, he has returned to international biodiversity research, ecological – economics and the science – policy interface. In 2007-2008 he was the leader of the DG Environment project “The Cost of Policy Inaction: the case of not meeting the 2010 biodiversity target”.
