Neurodis (workshop)

March 28th from 9:00 to 11:00

"Invisible to the human eye: extracting more information from brain images"

Traditionally, the appeal of imaging has been its ability to “look inside” the body, and image analysis has been mainly visual. With the advent of standardized coordinate systems, atlas databases, and cheap computing power, it has become possible to probe images beyond what is visible to the naked eye. In this workshop, renowned international experts will describe developments and applications, and discuss implications for neuroscience and clinical care.

ERINHA (workshop)
"Building of a pan european BSL4 research infrastructure"

March 28th from 11:45 to 13:15

ERINHA is a project of building a pan-European research infrastructure aiming to reinforce the European coordination and capacities for the study and the surveillance of highly pathogenic micro-organisms. The ERINHA infrastructure will provide open access to state-of-the-art BSL4 facilities for the European scientific community to enhance basic and finalised research activities and diagnostic activities. The infrastructure will promote the harmonization of biosafety and biosecurity procedures will develop standards for the management of biological resources, diagnosis of group 4 pathogens, and training of BSL4 labs users.

ERINHA infrastructure has been included in the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) in its update of 2008. Formed in 2002, the ESFRI brings together representatives of Member States, Associate Countries and of the Commission. The ESFRI has been commissioned to prepare a roadmap on the long-term needs of research infrastructures in Europe.

ERINHA infrastructure has entered into a preparatory phase of 36 months which has officially started on the 1st November 2010. Its purpose is to bring the ERINHA to the level of legal, financial and organisational maturity required to move to construction and operation phase.

ERINHA preparatory phase is funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme. The project is coordinated by Inserm at the Jean Mérieux BSL4 laboratory and actually gathers complementary expertise of 22 partners and 13 associated partners from 16 countries across Europe, composed of research institutions including all European BSL4 laboratories, and government bodies.

Euroscience (workshop)
"Nano-Safety – Risk Governance of Manufactured Nanoparticles"

March 28th from 14:30 to 16:30

On the basis of a report carried out by the European Technology Assessment Group (ETAG) for STOA (Science and Technology Options Assessment) of the European Parliament, the workshop aims to discuss the present state of the potential environmental, health and safety risks of manufactured nanoparticles. Because of the great uncertainties regarding their actual health and environmental effects and numerous methodological challenges to establish risk assessment procedures, risk appraisal and risk management of manufactured particulate nanomaterials are confronted with serious challenges. At the same time precautionary regulatory action is demanded by a number of stakeholders and parts of the general public.

Chair:

  • Dr. Raphaela Kitson-Pantano, program director ESOF

Speakers

  • Member of STOA of the European Parliament
  • Thorsten Fleischer, Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis-KIT
  • M. Laurent LEVY, Professor at Université Joseph Fourier (UFJ)

Symposium : Nutrition for better health

March 28th 12h30 to 14h00 (Lunch Symposium)

The BioVision 2011 Lunch Symposium ‘Nutrition for Better Health - Applying New Science with Special Attention to Patient Needs’ is jointly organized by  DSM, Patient Alliances and the International Osteoporosis Foundation. The forum provides a unique platform, where selected experts address and discuss specific nutrition needs and requirements of patients, building on latest progress in science. Besides the relevance of nutrition for patients on a daily basis - be it hospitalized or outdoor patients - and the specific needs responding to various diseases, emerging data will be presented to demonstrate the rapid progress in science and the implications on nutrition. Nutrition is important for human health in all life stages, from conception to the elderly. Moreover, exciting data in the field of vitamin D research and its promising impact on the quality of live for patients will be presented: an excellent case demonstrating the benefits of micronutrients for human health.

Preparing for Life Initiative

March 28th from 16:45 to 18:00

“Preparing for Life” is a patient driven initiative originating from the BioVision 2005 plenary session "The beginning of Life".

Its first objective is to contribute to the reduction of maternal and childhood mortality and morbidity, thereby  supporting the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.

Every day  30.000 children under age of 5 die and annually 7,9 million children are born with a serious disorder  and all this mainly from preventable causes.

“Preparing for Life” is a joint venture of  groups of patients (IGA), science (academia) and service  (rotary) and open to international organisations, governmental bodies, non-governmental organisations, academics, industry and individuals.

“Preparing for Life” will promote international and regional awareness of and the development of programmes for preconception care, particularly in middle and low-income countries and so contribute to safe motherhood and the birth of  healthy infants with the expectation of healthy longevity.

Vivagora (workshop)

March 28th from 17:30 to 19:30

Workshop in french.

Moderator

Neurodis & Lyon Neuroscience Research Center (Workshop)

Enter the brain matrix: from neural synchrony to cognition and brain-machine interfaces

March 29th from 09:00 to 11:00

Research into the mechansims and role of neural synchronization is a key topic in neuroscience today. Seminal studies in animals and humans reveal how the phenomenon of neural synchrony within cell assemblies mediates cognitive processes and how synchronized activity across brain circuits may provide a general mechanism for the coordination of distributed neural activity patterns. Cutting-edge research in this field is also providing critical insight into the pathophysiology of major brain disorders such as Schizophrenia and Autism. Furthermore, the ability to monitor neural synchrony in the high-frequency range is opening up new perspectives for brain-machine interfaces and real-time human electrophysiology. Beyond improving our knowledge of the healthy brain, measuring neural synchrony provides critical insight into brain disorders and future neural rehabilitation techniques.
